  • So what would Leslie Knope think about Liz Lemon? That’s the best part, and the most telling: Leslie would be proud of Liz’s accomplishments. She would respect her desire for a husband and baby, and admire her career achievements. She’d encourage her efforts to get more respect as a female executive, while encouraging Lemon to reach out to the other women in her office. Leslie Knope understands that women’s advancement is about the advancement of all women, and that women need support from one another just as much—in fact, much more—than they need approval and access from the men that surround them.

From a Newsweek Blog (via standardreview)

Here are a few things I will talk about ad nauseum: public education, dialogue, twins, and MY LOVE FOR PARKS AND RECREATION. If you haven’t been watching this show, go watch it now.

Recently I have had two different people tell me they don’t like Amy Poehler (in response to me recommending Parks and Recreation, since I do that constantly), and they gave me identical reasons: they like Tina Fey better. These were both significant others of good friends of mine, and I like both of them a lot, and I may or may not have accidentally accused them of being sexist pigs.

Thanks Patriarchy, I know you try hard to get between me and boyfriends and girlfriends I approve of, but I will only let you be semi-successful! This is what I meant:

Comedy is a sexist industry. This is a well-known truth that can be verified by checking the cast or writing team of almost any comedy show. Don’t even get me started on Conan’s final episode. I have also found this to be true on a personal level - as a funny woman (if I do say so myself!), I have found myself treated with suspicion for harnessing power that is apparently not meant for me. Thus, I am sensitive about this issue. I want there to be lots of successful famous funny women. I am sad that we are in a society where the two that are the most successful at the moment find themselves constantly compared. I don’t hear people saying they dislike Jimmy Fallon because they like Will Ferrell better - there are so many male comedians out there that you don’t have to hold the two against each other; you can dislike Jimmy because he’s just not that funny.

In conclusion, if you don’t like Amy Poehler’s style, that’s okay (though you are wrong, clearly), but I hope for a day that there are so many visible funny women that you just can’t decide which one to compare her to.

In conclusive conclusion, Amy Poehler is the best. Stop reading and go watch some TV.
